ATEX Enclosures —
The Complete Guide

ATEX (from the French ATmosphères EXplosibles) is the European directive (2014/34/EU) governing equipment used in potentially explosive atmospheres. An ATEX-certified enclosure has been tested and certified to contain any internal ignition source, preventing it from igniting the surrounding explosive atmosphere.

UK ATEX compliance post-Brexit is maintained under the UK equivalent legislation (UKEX), with UKCA marking available alongside CE marking on request.

IECEx is the international equivalent certification scheme — recognised globally and required for export projects, offshore installations and multinational supply chains.

ATEX in Every Material

Most UK ATEX enclosure suppliers only offer one or two materials. TEC offers ATEX certified enclosures in four — allowing you to specify the right material for your environment, not just what’s available.

🧧

GRP — ATEX Certified

Lightweight, non-conductive, corrosion-resistant GRP for offshore, coastal and chemical environments. Ideal where weight is critical or steel would corrode. Zone 1 & 2 certified.

Zone 1 & 2IP66Non-conductive
🥊

Stainless Steel 316L — ATEX

Marine-grade 316L stainless for offshore platforms, chemical plant and washdown environments. Maximum corrosion resistance combined with ATEX certification and IP66/68 rating.

Zone 1 & 2IP66/68316L Grade
⚖️

Aluminium — ATEX

Lightweight die-cast aluminium ATEX enclosures for onshore oil & gas, petrochemical and industrial applications. Excellent weight-to-strength ratio. Zone 1 & 2 certified.

Zone 1 & 2IP65/66Lightweight

ATEX Applications Across Industry

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between ATEX Zone 1 and Zone 2?
+
Zone 1 is an area where explosive gas atmospheres are likely to occur during normal operation — requiring Category 2 (II 2G) certified equipment. Zone 2 is an area where explosive gas atmospheres are not likely in normal operation but may occur occasionally, requiring Category 3 (II 3G) certified equipment. Zone 1 certification is more stringent and equipment certified for Zone 1 can also be used in Zone 2.
What is the difference between ATEX and IECEx?
+
ATEX is the European Union directive (2014/34/EU) governing equipment in explosive atmospheres and is recognised across the EU and UK. IECEx is the international certification scheme of the International Electrotechnical Commission, recognised globally including in Australia, the Middle East, and many Asian markets. For export projects or offshore installations under international classification societies, IECEx certification is typically required alongside or instead of ATEX.
Can GRP enclosures be ATEX certified?
+
Yes — and this is one of TEC’s key differentiators. Most UK ATEX enclosure suppliers only offer ATEX in metal enclosures. TEC supplies ATEX Zone 1 and Zone 2 certified GRP enclosures, which are preferred in offshore and coastal environments where the non-conductive, corrosion-resistant properties of GRP are advantageous.
What materials are available for ATEX enclosures?
+
TEC offers ATEX certified enclosures in four materials: GRP (glass reinforced polyester), stainless steel 316L, cast aluminium, and polycarbonate. The choice of material depends on your specific environmental conditions, weight constraints, chemical exposure, and project specification.
Do ATEX enclosures have an IP rating?
+
Yes — ATEX and IP ratings are separate but complementary specifications. IP rating describes the degree of protection against solid particle and liquid ingress; ATEX certification describes the protection against explosive atmosphere ignition. Our ATEX enclosures are available in IP65, IP66 and IP68 ratings alongside the ATEX certification.
