What Is a GRP Enclosure?

A GRP enclosure (Glass Reinforced Plastic, also known as fibreglass or FRP) is a protective housing manufactured from a composite material combining polyester resin with woven glass fibre reinforcement. The result is a housing that is stronger than steel by weight, completely non-conductive, corrosion-resistant in virtually any environment, and maintenance-free throughout a service life typically exceeding 25–30 years.

Unlike steel enclosures, GRP requires no painting, no rust treatment and no corrosion inhibitors. Unlike polycarbonate, it can be manufactured in large structural sizes and withstand significant mechanical loads. It is the preferred material for outdoor electrical installations, utility infrastructure, coastal environments, chemical processing, and increasingly, EV charging and renewable energy applications across the UK.

The Enclosure Company has supplied GRP enclosures to UK with over 50 years of enclosure experience — from compact metering cabinets to bespoke walk-in substation kiosks, and including ATEX Zone 1 & 2 certified GRP for the most demanding hazardous area applications.

Why Choose GRP?

🛡️
Corrosion Resistant
Immune to rust and corrosion even in coastal, offshore and chemical environments where steel would deteriorate rapidly.
Non-Conductive
Electrically non-conductive — inherently safer for electrical housing applications and provides additional protection against fault conditions.
☀️
UV Resistant
UV-stabilised gel coat resists degradation and colour fade over decades of outdoor exposure without maintenance.
🔧
Low Maintenance
No painting, no rust treatment, no galvanising required. Service life exceeds 25–30 years with zero maintenance in most applications.
💪
High Strength-to-Weight
Pound-for-pound stronger than steel when manufactured to engineering specification. Significantly lighter — reducing installation costs and structural loading.
🌡️
Temperature Stable
Low thermal conductivity. Good performance across a wide operating temperature range — suitable for both arctic and hot climate deployments.

GRP Enclosure FAQs

What is a GRP enclosure?
+
A GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic) enclosure is a protective housing manufactured from a fibreglass composite material. GRP enclosures combine polyester resin with glass fibre reinforcement to create a housing that is stronger than steel by weight, completely non-conductive, corrosion-resistant in virtually any environment, and maintenance-free throughout a typical service life of 25–30+ years. GRP is also commonly referred to as fibreglass, FRP (Fibre-Reinforced Plastic) or polyester enclosures.
What IP rating do GRP enclosures have?
+
TEC's GRP enclosures are available in IP54, IP65 and IP66 ratings as standard. IP66 is the most commonly specified for UK outdoor installations — providing complete dust protection and protection against powerful water jets from any direction. For applications requiring temporary immersion (IP67) or deep submersion (IP68), we supply specialist enclosures rated to 300 metres depth alongside our standard GRP range.
Can GRP enclosures be ATEX certified?
+
Yes. The Enclosure Company supplies ATEX certified GRP enclosures for Zone 1 and Zone 2 hazardous area applications, as well as IECEx approved versions for international projects. This is relatively rare in the UK GRP enclosure market — most suppliers only offer standard industrial GRP. Our ATEX GRP range is used in offshore oil and gas, chemical processing, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and renewable energy installations. Contact our technical team to discuss your Zone classification and specification requirements.
What is the difference between GRP and steel enclosures?
+
GRP enclosures are non-conductive, corrosion-resistant without any treatment, significantly lighter than steel, and require no maintenance throughout their service life. Steel enclosures offer greater mechanical strength and are easier to field-modify (drilling, welding). GRP is typically the preferred choice for outdoor, coastal, chemical and utility environments; steel (particularly stainless steel 316L) is preferred for heavy industrial, hygienic and high-impact applications. Our technical team can advise on the optimal material for your specific application, environment and budget.
Can GRP enclosures be made to bespoke sizes?
+
Yes. TEC manufactures bespoke GRP enclosures to your exact specification — any external dimensions, cable entry positions, ventilation arrangements, internal backboard spec, RAL colour and finish. Bespoke GRP enclosures carry the same IP and ATEX certifications as our standard range. We provide same-day quotes on bespoke GRP enquiries. Contact us with your H × W × D dimensions, IP rating requirement, ATEX zone (if applicable), colour and quantity for a rapid quotation.
Are GRP enclosures suitable for EV charging installations?
+
Absolutely. GRP enclosures are an excellent choice for EV charging infrastructure — their IP66 weatherproofing, UV stability, non-conductive properties and corrosion resistance make them ideal for outdoor charge point housing. IK10-rated vandal-resistant GRP is available for public-facing EV installations. We supply GRP housing for rapid charger units, EV distribution boards, charge point metering enclosures and associated BESS electrical installations across the UK. Request a specific EV application quote from our technical team.
How quickly can GRP enclosures be delivered?
+
Standard GRP enclosures from our UK stock are available for next-day delivery across the UK. We hold extensive stock across single door, double door and walk-in GRP kiosk ranges. For bespoke or custom GRP enclosures, lead times depend on specification complexity — call us on 0203 743 0700 for a current lead time on your specific requirement. We will always quote a realistic lead time and keep you informed throughout production.
What standards do your GRP enclosures comply with?
+
Our GRP enclosures comply with: BS EN 60529 (IP ingress protection ratings), BS EN 62262 (IK mechanical impact ratings), ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU and EN 60079 series (for ATEX certified versions), IECEx IEC 60079 series (for IECEx certified versions). CE marking is applied where applicable. UKCA marking is available on request for UK-specific compliance requirements post-Brexit.
Do you supply GRP enclosures for the UK utilities sector?
+
Yes — GRP enclosures for DNO and IDNO metering, feeder pillars, service termination and street furniture applications have been a core part of our GRP range for over 50 years. We understand UKPN, Western Power, Northern Powergrid and other DNO specifications and can supply GRP kiosks and cabinets to these standards. Contact us with your network specification or DNO reference for a fast quotation.
How does GRP compare to polycarbonate for outdoor applications?
+
Both GRP and polycarbonate are excellent choices for outdoor applications. GRP is generally preferred where larger enclosures are needed (walk-in kiosks, distribution board cabinets), where UV exposure is severe, or where mechanical robustness is paramount. Polycarbonate is preferred for smaller enclosures, where viewing windows are required, or where weight is a critical factor. Both achieve IP66 rating. We supply both materials and our technical team can help identify the best choice for your specific application — call 0203 743 0700 for expert advice.
